Mother’s Day

May 4, 2017

There’s something special about a mother-child relationship; it’s sacrosanct. Dr Christiane Northrup, author of the book Mother-Daughter Wisdom, says: “The mother-daughter relationship is the most powerful bond in the world, for better or for worse. It sets the stage for all other relationships.”

I was lucky enough to be raised by a strong woman who encouraged me to take risks and dare to dream. A self-made dressmaker in her village in Italy, she went on to become Via Veneto’s  (the most elite fashion strip in Rome) most requested designer and couturier. My mum nurtured my creativity and she taught me to act in the face of fear. I would not be who I am today without her. Cristina Re the brand would probably not exist.

Mums are our teachers, our nurturers, they are the emotional backbone of a family. Often, they are the ones who make the sacrifices so our lives are better. Her boundaries make you better. Your mum will always tell you how it is, even if you don’t always want to hear the truth.

Not all mums are created equal, of course. Some are more absent than others and, like any relationship, it’s not always smooth sailing. But Mother’s Day is a magic opportunity to show your mum you care, rekindle a relationship, or think about her if she’s passed.

Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908, when American Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother in West Virginia. St Andrew’s Methodist Church now holds the International Mother’s Day Shrine. Her campaign to make Mother’s Day a recognised holiday in the United States began in 1905.

Today, yes, it’s commercialised – but, in my eyes, it’s still a wonderful excuse to celebrate the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world. Why not treat your mum to a beautiful high tea at the Grand Hyatt Melbourne or Sofitel Sydney Wentworth or spoil her with a luxury tea set that she will cherish forever.

If you’re a mum, don’t forget to stop and pat yourself on the back this Mother’s Day. Remember to reward and pamper yourself for the beautiful gift you gave to this world.

‘Here’s to strong women. May we know them, may we be them, may we raise them.’

From the team at Cristina Re we wish you a lovely Mother’s Day filled with love and happiness xo
